Defining Native and Non-Native.

A native English speaker is someone who has learned English as the first language in childhood. That means being a native speaker of a language is a developmental fact which cannot be changed afterward in life through training or learning (Cook, 1999). This also implies that nobody can ever become a native speaker of another language than the first one learned. Nevertheless, people can be native speakers of two or more languages when they have acquired both languages early in childhood. Those people are called bilinguals, but I will not go any deeper into this concept within this paper. Non-native speakers of a language, on the other hand, are people who have learned this particular language as a second or third language, but have a different language as native language. Even with lifelong practice a language can never become one’s native language.

In contrast most non-native speakers only start learning English at the age of five or later. So they learn the words but they don’t consciously learn the same emotional connection to the language. The spoken word sounds more intellectual, less emotional, and is based on a weaker foundation. Under stress this difference becomes obvious. How do you know if you are native speaker or not.
